Peer Counseling promotes personal growth through peer support to individuals with disabilities, and ultimately enhances independence and quality of life. Experienced AIM staff share knowledge, related disability experiences, and provide support for the development of vital coping and independent living skills. Some frequently asked questions are answered below: What is peer counseling? Peer counseling is where a person who has been through a similar experience guides another through a process. They do this by developing a helping relationship, using active listening skills, and having knowledge of the resources that exist in Berks County. How is peer counseling different from therapy? Peer counseling is NOT traditional therapy. The peer counselor and the mentors in this program are not trained medical therapists. They can guide an individual and offer advice, but the consumer makes their own choices. How does one become a peer counseling mentor? They need to contact the Peer Counselor at Abilities in Motion and say they want to be a mentor. They are then given training materials to read and a program to complete. Upon completion of the program the Peer Counselor will match the new mentor with a consumer who requests assistance. Do I have to go to a “place” to get peer counseling services? While the Peer Counselor on staff at Abilities in Motion may want to meet you initially to get to know you, meetings can be done either in our office, in your home, or at another agreed upon location. Once you are connected with a mentor, you can make arrangements as to where you would like to meet. If you are unable to leave your home, phone sessions are also a possibility. How much does peer counseling cost? It is a FREE service at Abilities in Motion |
